LEWK n

Cambridge have added the word LEWK to the dictionary. It is a respelling and re-pronunciation of the word LOOK:

The word swaps the lax /ʊ/ vowel found in most pronunciations of LOOK, for the closer, longer /uː/ vowel sound found in NEW or CHOOSE.

This pronunciation isn’t actually new though, as it’s found in many northern accents in England for the original word.

LEWK is not used as a verb, it is a noun, so you could say “A fabulous LEWK.” It has origins in the LGBTQ+ community and was used extensively in the TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race.
