‘The Sound of English’

Summer Intensive Courses

Perfect your English pronunciation and fluency this summer in central London.

Through learning to accurately hear and pronounce the 45 sounds of English, to join sounds together, use accurate stress and 3 intonation patterns, your spoken English clarity and confidence will take leaps forwards.

Designed for advanced second language learners, the summer intensive programme offers 5 day group and flexible individual courses for visitors to London. Every class is highly practical using a PPP method of Present, Practise, Perform – designed to build knowledge and confidence with every class. Your teacher is a specialist in spoken English and certified by the International Phonetics Association and you will receive Pronunciation Studio’s book and audio to practise with long after you return.

Thousands of students from all over the world have improved their spoken accuracy here (read their testimonials here). We are located in Central London so it is very convenient for any trip to London. We offer 5 day group courses running Monday to Friday and individual training of anything from 1 day to 2 weeks specially designed for visitors in the summer.

Method, Materials & Teachers

The 5 day ‘The Sound of English’ group syllabus covers all the sounds, structures and intonation patterns of British English in a highly practical way. With small groups, every student has individual attention, and through a combination of presentation, exercising and drilling, each new sound and structure is taken on with confidence. For those that would like to take their level further, their is a second part covering advanced pronunciation and intonation, the entire program then is 10 days.

View syllabus for Part I ‘The Sound of English’ here (pdf).
– View syllabus for Part II Advanced here (pdf).

Your teacher can spot your mistakes immediately and coach you to remove the influence of your first language on your English. So the classes will show you not only how to produce sounds accurately, but also how to select them and how they differ from your first language. You will be drilled on sounds, words, sentences and conversations, real spoken situations are always simulated.

The course book ‘The Sound of English’ by Pronunciation Studio is included with every booking (download a sample here). It contains all the notes and drills we use in class and has a full audio pack so you can practise at home after the course. Advanced courses also have their own book with audio.

FAQ

We never have more than 8 students per class to ensure that every learner receives individual attention.
All of our courses are for advanced English learners, we don’t slow down in class so you need to be able to follow normal native speaker speed of speech. In TESOL terms, the level needs to be high intermediate to proficiency. If you are not sure, please contact us first so we can advise you.
In order to join Part II you need to already know the sounds, key structures and intonation patterns of English. If you have studied these already on another course, you should be able to go straight to Part II. If you have any doubt, please contact us first so one of our teachers can check your level.
NOTE – Part I & Part II are not based on general English level, they are only related to your level of skill and knowledge in pronunciation.
Every level includes its own course book with audio. Your first course always also includes ‘The Sound of English’ with 3CDs.
Definitely! If you are in London come along to our free taster on the Schwa sound or take an individual assessment. If you are not in London you can try an individual online assessment class via Skype.
All courses are refundable minus £15 admin fee up to 5 days before start date.
Either contact us to reserve your place or reserve using the online booking system (see links further up this page for GROUP and INDIVIDUAL options).

Accommodation

Pronunciation Studio is within easy reach of all central areas of London. If you would like a hotel for  your stay we would recommend the Russell Square area – it’s London’s university area and it’s a short walk to Pronunciation Studio (click here to search it on booking.com). Alternative nearby options are King’s Cross & Holborn, but anywhere in the centre is easy to reach.

Another excellent (and cheaper) option is University Rooms – where London’s universities rent the residence rooms out during the holidays. These places are always clean and well kept, and often very good value – from £40/night.
