IPA Certified Teachers
Pronunciation specialists with 10+ years’ classroom experience.
In the class, your teacher will do various activities with you to assess your pronunciation skills in the following 4 areas:
1) Vowel Sounds
English has 20 vowel sounds – producing them accurately involves 2 skills: sound selection and sound production. In the assessment, your teacher will see and hear how you make your sounds naturally and then test you on specific areas using repetition and reading aloud.
2) Consonant Sounds
Accurate production of the 24 English consonant sounds is essential for clear pronunciation. Your teacher will hear you make each sound in isolation, then in different positions within words and sentences.
3) Joining
Producing sounds in isolation is an essential skill, but when we speak, everything changes. Sounds disappear, shorten, lengthen or change slightly to create fast connected speech. Your teacher will listen to the way you join your sounds and explain any techniques that would help your fluency.
Stress involves placing emphasis in certain places in words and sentences – an essential aspect of clear speech. How do you place emphasis? This is your intonation – pitch movement, length and volume, the music of English. We’ll listen to your natural speech and try the three English intonation patterns with you, explaining any parts that you could study to give you more expression and accuracy.
Understanding how your 1st language is influencing your English helps when you study pronunciation. This area is sometimes called ‘Accent Reduction’ (for a detailed description see our article “What is Accent Reduction?“). If studying common pronunciation problems related to your mother tongue will help you, your teacher will explain this in the assessment.
What happens after the class?
Your teacher will complete and send your Pronunciation Plan:
– it’s a document showing the areas of sounds, stress and intonation that you can work on to improve your English pronunciation. Your teacher will also include notes on anything additional that came up and their recommendations for further study.
