Accent Training 2019-01-09T15:19:30+00:00

Learn how to ‘do’ different English accents using a structured, practical approach. Whether it’s a very specific regional accent like Cockney, or a broad accent model like General American, we can take you step by step through the unique sounds and patterns.

Who is Regional Accent Training for?

Anybody who wants to learn to ‘do’ different accents, whether professionally for stage, performance, or simply a desire to learn the skill. We gear the classes up to your needs, some people prefer a more intuitive approach involving lots of copying, others prefer a more structured phonetic approach using sound substitutions – we can do both.

How does it work?

Accents are like codes, they have a specific set of sounds, rules and melodies, so by studying the code, you can learn to ‘do’ the accent. Firstly we need to know the accent you are aiming to ‘do’ – this can be a general indication like ‘West Country’ or it could be the accent of a very specific person or place. Once we have the target accent, we’ll try it and see which bits you need to study and practice in order to learn the accent.

Which accents are covered?

We can prepare your classes on any English accent, whether it’s a regional English accent (Scouse, West Country, Cockney, Geordie etc.) or an international accent (General American, Scottish, Dublin etc.). We just need to know what your target accent is in order to prepare your sessions.

Who teaches the classes?

David Bauckham (below) is Pronunciation Studio’s regional accent trainer. He has decades of experience on stage, radio and television performing characters with a wide variety of accents. As an accent coach he holds a PGDip in Voice and is certified by the International Phonetic Association, he has been providing accent training at Pronunciation Studio for nearly 10 years. The accent audio examples on this page are David’s.

What materials are used?

Included with your class or course is ‘The Sound of English Pronunciation’ which contains the sounds of GB (General British) English, audio and accent notes on some regional accents of the British Isles. We use this as a starting point, then we’ll add specific materials relating to the accent you wish to learn, this is in the form of worksheets, audio and video for practising the target accent.

I want to learn RP, (Received Pronunciation), is this the course for me?

We can teach you RP or any variation of it like Upper RP (Posh). RP is quite a broad concept, it means something different to different people – some associate it simply with a standard British pronunciation, others associate it with 50s BBC English or even The Queen’s English. So we would need to know exactly what your target is before starting.

English is not my first language, are these classes suitable?

If English is your second language, you will need to be able to produce the full range of standard (GB) sounds in order to study regional accents, see ‘The Sound of English Pronunciation’ for more information. We run group and individual courses specifically designed for second language English speakers – see our courses page for information.

How long does it take?

That depends on many factors including the target accent and your natural speech patterns. Some people can do accents by copying them with very little practice, other people need more focus and repetition to become confident. We can advise you on this after working with you for an intro session. Courses are anything from 1 to 40 hours with flexible timetables suited to your needs – some people study intensively, others over the space of several months.
